House Approves $61bn Aid for Ukraine

Over the weekend, Ukraine received significant economica support from the U.S. as the House of Representatives passed a $61 billion foreign aid package for Kyiv. Despite months of delays and objections from hard-line Republicans, the bill, which also includes additional aid for Israel and Taiwan, is now headed to the Democratic-majority Senate. It’s expected to be approved this week before reaching President Joe Biden for final signing into law.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to U.S. lawmakers for passing the bill, emphasizing its critical role in preventing the escalation of the conflict, saving lives, and bolstering the strength of both nations.

With Ukraine urgently needing air defense systems, artillery, and ammunition to combat Russian offensives in eastern Ukraine, time is of the essence. Defense analysts stress the importance of immediate delivery of aid and supplies to rejuvenate Ukraine’s military campaign and stabilize the front.

Russia, however, has condemned the aid package, arguing that it will only worsen the conflict. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized the U.S. House of Representatives’ decision, claiming it would enrich the U.S. while causing further harm to Ukraine.

Russian officials expressed skepticism about the aid’s efficacy and reiterated their stance that the end of the Kyiv regime is inevitable, irrespective of additional assistance.

The future of U.S. aid to Ukraine remains uncertain, especially regarding the policies of former President Donald Trump, who has made ambiguous statements about Ukraine and the duration of the conflict.
