The Biden administration’s $5 billion program to deploy electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations has made dismal progress, with only seven stations operational since its inception in 2021. This embarrassing performance was sharply criticized by Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley, who labeled it a “pathetic” display of governmental inefficiency.
Despite the Biden administration’s lofty goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through widespread EV adoption, their execution has been nothing short of a debacle. She claimed that 27 states have issued commercial requests to build charging stations and projected that around 1,000 EV-charging stations might be operational by the end of the year. Granholm even admitted that some areas designated for charging stations lack basic electricity infrastructure, further underscoring the flawed planning and execution.
As of December, the United States boasted 183,000 public charging ports, with the number of publicly available fast-charging ports increasing by 90% since the start of the Biden administration. Despite these figures, Bhatt’s optimism about meeting the 500,000 charging port goal rings hollow given the administration’s track record.
