Exclusive polling data reveals that only 38 percent of likely 2024 voters have confidence in President Joe Biden’s ability to survive another four-year term. This uncertainty opens up the possibility that Vice President Kamala Harris could assume the presidency by January 2029 if Biden wins reelection.
Similarly, 36 percent of likely voters believe Harris will be president at the end of the term, mirroring the proportion that expects Biden to remain in office. These findings highlight the significant role age plays in the upcoming election, particularly regarding Biden, who, at 81, faces doubts about his ability to serve another term.
In contrast, voters express greater confidence in Donald Trump’s ability to complete a full term, with over half believing he would do so, while 34 percent harbor doubts. This discrepancy underscores the importance of considering potential successors should health issues or other incapacities arise.
James Johnson, co-founder of the polling firm responsible for the data, notes that voters perceive Biden as too old for the presidency, posing a challenge for his reelection prospects.
Biden addressed concerns about his age directly in his recent State of the Union address, but instances of perceived frailty continue to shape public perception of his fitness for office.
While Trump has criticized Biden’s suitability for the presidency due to his age, he too has faced scrutiny for verbal slip-ups and unforced errors. Despite this, Trump maintains a consistent lead in polls, suggesting a favorable position for the former president at present.
The Biden campaign declined to comment on the polling results.
