Target has confirmed that it will not be stocking LGBTQ+ merchandise for Pride month in June at some of its stores following backlash last year, which impacted its overall sales volume for 2023.
The retail giant, with approximately 2,000 stores, announced on Friday that the decision to offer Pride merchandise, including adult apparel, home products, and food and beverage, will depend on “guest insights and consumer research.” Although Target declined to specify the number of stores not carrying the merchandise, it assured that a full assortment will be available online.
In an email statement to The Associated Press, Target reiterated its commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community both during Pride Month and throughout the year, emphasizing the importance of creating a welcoming environment for its LGBTQIA+ team members.
These changes come after Target faced criticism last year for its LGBTQ+ merchandise, prompting the removal of some items from stores and adjustments to displays nationwide. The retailer encountered further backlash for its response to anti-LGBTQ+ activism, which has surged in Republican state legislatures.
This situation underscores the challenges companies face in accommodating diverse customer groups amid cultural divisions, particularly regarding transgender rights. Target’s decision to reduce its Pride merchandise presence this year aligns with CEO Brian Cornell’s previous remarks about being more considerate in merchandise offerings following last year’s backlash.
